Относительно недавно я опубликовал материал, посвящённый созданию винтажной игровой машины на базе 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000. Из этого материала, казалось бы, совершенно очевидно следует, что автор, то есть я, полностью осознаёт что и для чего он делает, логически обосновывает все свои ходы и в следующей главе материала можно будет увидеть результаты тестов с позитивными или не очень позитивными выводами о возможностях 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000. Всё верно, конечно, вот только за то время, которое прошло с момента написания первой части материала, утекло достаточно много времени. В нашем форуме, в Клубе Хранителей Легенд,  шло активное обсуждение новинок, появившихся у коллекционеров, люди делились опытом и знаниями, а я, ожидая приезда ко мне всех нужных для мега-теста видеокарт, читал и радовался тому, что удалось найти моим коллегам.

Однажды, попивая свежесваренный кофе, я изучал любимую ветку форума и в голове молнией пронеслась мысль "А может быть я смогу как-то улучшить мой Napalm FX?". Честно скажу, такие размышления появились благодаря беседам с форумчанами aleksej, dizzydevil, RUS и Clear66, поскольку именно они стремились сделать максимально быструю ISA-совместимую машину. В этом материале я расскажу лишь о теоретических выкладках, о том, что я предполагаю получить и какие приспособления буду для этого использовать.

Постановка задачи

Перво-наперво нужно придумать название для будущего проекта. Поскольку первая версия носила гордое имя Napalm FX, вторая будет называться Napalm FX Platinum. Банально, но красиво. Хотел назвать его "Napalm FX Maximum", но как максимальное  решение для Voodoo 5 6000 этот проект не сгодится (ведь через переходник на PCI эту карту можно поставить на самый свежий Core i7), а вот как флагманский компьютер для старых игр мой проект вполне должен подойти. Теперь время описать требования к задуманному:

Материнская плата:

  • Поддержка 2-х или 3-х слотов ISA с возможностью выделения DMA;
  • Поддержка последних моделей Pentium 4 Extreme Edition;
  • Наличие минимум 2-х PCI-X разъёмов;
  • Наличие 4-х слотов под память с максимальным поддерживаемым объёмом в 4 Гбайт;

Процессор:

  • Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.2 ГГц или 3.4 ГГц

Видеосистема:

  • NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra или GeForce 6800 Ultra AGP
  • 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 AGP
  • QUantum3D AAlchemy 8164 

Переходники и конвертеры:

AGP2PCI - конвертер, позволяющий установить Voodoo 5 6000 в любой PCI/PCI-66/PCI-X разъём. Должен работать в режиме PCI-66 для достижения максимальной пропускной способности шины, сопоставимой оной у AGP. Именно для этого выдвигаются повышенные требования к материнской плате по части PCI-оснастки.

Расширитель ISA с 1 разъёма на 3, ориентированный влево. Все прекрасно понимают, что в идеале, чем больше ISA, тем лучше, поскольку хочется одновременно использовать 2-3 звуковые карты различного типа. Чтобы решить проблему расположения устройств в слотах ориентация такого расширителя должна быть левосторонней.  Единственный вопрос, который меня мучает, так это перегрузка одного ISA порта по питанию при установке трёх карт в один переходник, питающийся от одного ISA на материнской плате. Буду использовать тестовую материнку и набор звуковух, которые не жалко сжечь :)

Переходник с IDE на Compact Flash для подключения карт памяти с записанными на них дистрибутивами старых игр или для установки ОС - пока не решил. Хочется максимизировать производительность дисковой подсистемы, не тратясь на SSD. При этом нужно получить максимальную гибкость решения и лёгкость заполнения накопителя или его замены. В случае с картами памяти формата Compact Flash проблем со скоростью не будет, а вот износостойкость подобных накопителей под вопросом. Буду изучать.

Ожидания от системы

По правде говоря, для старых DOS игр с головой хватает старого друга - Intel Pentium III 1000 МГц или AMD Athlon 1000 МГц в слотовом исполнении. Материнские платы для этих камушков прекрасно работают с ISA, найти решение с поддержкой 3 ISA, по крайней мере под процессор Intel - не проблема. Но вот беда, мои предварительные тесты показали (хотя это и без них было ясно), что флагманские слотовые камни, при всей "годности" материнских плат для них, не подходят для раскачки не то что 8 чипов Алхимии, но даже 4 процессора VSA-100 никак не загружены максимально. Кроме всего прочего, держать второй системник для игр 2004-2005 годов как-то не очень хочется. Именно поэтому захотелось сделать ещё несколько больших шагов навстречу своему идеалу и собрать таки максимально тюнингованный компьютер, пригодный для работы с DOS, Windows 9x и Windows XP приложениями (последние с ограничениями по времени - 2004-2005). Думаю, постановка задачи, сделанная мною выше, позволит реализовать все мои фантазии.

Опасения

Разумеется, на бумаге все мои выкладки выглядят красиво, однако на практике всё может оказаться куда сложнее. Во-первых, совместное размещение Voodoo 5 6000, AALchemy и GeForce может дать целый ряд сопутствующих проблем в виде аппаратных конфликтов, проблем установки и настройки всего этого добра в Windows. Если с последним фактом я знаю как разбираться, то первые два потребуют аккуратности и продумывания всего до мелочей. Такое железо очень трудно найти, а потому творить безрассудства я не стану.

Вторая проблема - ISA. Если в случае с AGP2PCI проблем нет, этот переходник проверен создателем и другими людьми, то расширитель ISA портов вещь неизученная. Как поведёт себя система после установки такого райзера - не ясно, да и проблема с питанием грозит проблемами с выгоранием слота на материнской плате, а это уже неоправданный риск.

Учитывая эти опасения, я предусмотрел шаги для отступления. Программа максимум желательна, но, честно говоря, не обязательна. Я могу отказаться от соседствования Алхимии и Voodoo 5 6000 в одной системе, равно как и двух ISA портов мне хватит для организации качестввенного звукового оформления в DOS. В общем, если на этапе примерки комплектующих будут сомнения, я упрощу задачу.

Как реализовать?

Не знаю, стал бы я писать такой огромный список требований к системе, если бы не мог найти всё нужное железо... Наверное не стал. Слава Богу, в этот раз предварительный список необходимых железок удалось найти, однако не всё из того, что нужно, у меня уже есть, да и то, что заказано из-за границы не совсем то, что мне нужно. Примером может служить процессор Pentium 4 XE 3.2 ГГц. Хороший камень, но не лучший, хочется 3.4 ГГц, а по приемлемой цене его не найти. Кроме того, есть кое-какие вопросы к переходникам и картам расширения. Все эти проблемы мне нужно утрясать и до момента завершения проекта пройдёт немало времени. Ещё один момент - при установке в систему ISA расширителя велика вероятность  того, что обычный корпус просто не подойдёт и такую систему придётся крепить в кастомном корпусе...

Продолжая тему про суровый бенчмаркинг сообщаю что через 20 минут мы (DRUM и Kim55) едем встречать вундеркинда последнего полугодия вольку или vow. На этот раз не нам предстаяла поездка в город суровых фрезеровщиков, а вольке предстояло ехать в город футбола с погодой около -30. Еще до наступления нового года я както позвонив вольке ляпнул что типа приезжайте с Максом (demiurg) теперь вы к нам, и Вова без проблем согласился...Теперь мы его встречать едем:). Очень нравятся такие люди которые без запар могут сорваться и все. Думаю в этот раз будет не меньшая порция радости нежели в прошлый раз в челябе. От себя хочу сказать, что меня лично начинает все больше привлекать такой вид бенчинга, когда нас собирается много. Поэтому могу сообщить что в ближайшие 2 дня будет лютая битва за медальки:) благо железа и азота будет завались.
